Social Media Talks from Tee Morris
ANTI-Social Media: What Not to Do in Web 2.0. Blogging. Podcasting. Facebook. Twitter. These terms are becoming more and more prevalent in both professional and personal conversations, and have reached a point where commercial jingles and talk shows divas rave about them. Social Media is quickly becoming the new cost-effective option in an economically troubled climate, but there’s a slight problem: Many are doing it horribly wrong. This is the “Tough Love” look at how people jump on the Social Media bandwagon and completely miss the point. From troublesome Twitters, to podcasts without purpose, to debunked blogs, this is a closer look at what happens when the “Social” is removed from Social Media.
ANTI-Social Media: Facebook Faux Pas
Washington Network Group, Washington, D.C.
February 2009
Speak Geek to Me: Social Media in a Nutshell. People know the internet, but not everyone quite grasps exactly what Web 2.0 is. Potential clientele, when it comes to Social Media, lack vocabulary and understanding of exactly what it is, what it can do, and what it cannot do. How is a podcast different from streaming media? What’s the difference between an email newsletter and a blog? And what exactly IS a wiki? That is what this talk is all about: understanding Social Media initiatives and how they work. “Speak Geek to Me” also gives critical looks at these new initiatives and explains why some Social Media solutions may not be the solution for you.
PODCASTING 101: How It Works, Who Is Doing It, and Why It Matters. From the man who (literally) wrote the #1 book on the subject, Podcasting 101 is an introduction to Do-It-Yourself audio and video distribution, looking more at the why’s behind this Social Media initiative. Podcasting 101 offers a practical approach, giving options on podcasting within a tight budget, investing and upgrading your recording studio, and planning out a podcast for your business. Along with this talk, Tee offers a hands-on workshop where participants can edit audio and prepare a file for podcasting as well as work on interview techniques.
All a Twitter: Getting Started, How to Build a Community and Conduct Business
Social Networking is promising something new for both the professional and the casual user of the Internet. This new interaction offers instant communication, the power of blogging, and the ability to build on connections all at the same time, but in the ever-fickled world of technology and pop culture, the difficult job is finding out which flavor-of-the-second is right for you. While many sites are geared for specific audiences — LinkedIn for the corporate world, Flickr for photographers professional and amateur, and so on — “popular sites” tend to lose themselves in additional plug-in’s, excessive media streaming, and pointless extensions such as Super Pokes and Fun Walls. Is there a Social Media site that keeps it simple, doesn’t lose itself in mindless add-on’s, and isn’t a time sink when it comes to maintenance? As a matter of fact, there is; and that is what Tee is here to talk about: Twitter. the 140-character (or less) solution. Along with explaining what it is (as well as what it isn’t), Tee provides you with a strategy to implement Twitter properly, assisting you and your business in walking that fine line between participation and promotion.
